The Cantate or allegorical serenades were performed together with Opera although with a commemorative purpose: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Monteverdi <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">himself wrote the famous <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">performed in 1624 at Palazzo Mocenigo. Six years later, in the same palazzo, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Proserpina Rapita <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">by Monteverdi, with the text by Giulio Strozzi, was performed. It was no longer a theatre for comedies and the family was allowed to turn it into an opera house.<br \/>\nThe theatre was rebuilt in less than a year and inaugurated in 1637: for the first time in the history of the music drama a public opera house with fee was created.<br \/>\nIt was so successful that soon other 16 Theatres were built and during the following century Venice boasted its enviable primacy for being the City of Opera par excellence in all Europe.<br \/>\nBetween the opening of San Cassiano Theatre and the opening of the last theatre of the century, the San Giovanni Grisostomo in 1678, more than 150 operas were performed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Francesco Cavalli <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Crespi<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, as well as <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Monteverdi<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, are some of the most important composers in Venice. They had the privilege to launch a new formula of opera, then improved in the future by other composers, whose structural units harmonized the librettist\u2019s and the composer\u2019s contribution. Moreover, in the Seventeenth century in Venice, the da capo aria consolidated the dynamic relationship between the audience and the singers and the figure of the leading lady emerged. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;128px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>The young Rossini at Teatro S. Mois\u00e8<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1554374325779{border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 8px !important;padding-bottom: 8px !important;border-left-color: #c59c26 !important;border-left-style: solid !important;}&#8221; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-6&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The Teatro S. Mois\u00e9 was one of the theatres where operas were performed for the first time, a small but very elegant theatre offering high quality music seasons. Here operas by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Cavalli, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Galuppi <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Rossini<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> were performed.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The young Gioacchino Rossini had his debut when he was eighteen years old at the Teatro S. Mois\u00e9 with <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>La cambiale di matrimonio [The Bill of Marriage] <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and, after the great success of this opera, he was applauded for <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>L\u2019Inganno felice; La Scala di seta; L\u2019Occasione fa il ladro<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Il Signor Bruschino<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<br \/>\nIn 1818 the Teatro S. Benedetto then destroyed in a fire. The judicial dispute between the Venier family (owner of the land on which it was built) and the association owner of the theatre followed the rebuilding and led the latter, after they failed the lawsuit, to rebuild a larger and more sumptuous theatre: the Teatro La Fenice.<br \/>\nThe theatre was inaugurated in 1790 and, until 1836, the premieres of a lot of masterpieces like <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Tancredi <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Semiramide <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Rossini<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>I Capuleti e i Montecchi<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Beatrice di Tenda<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Bellini, Belisario, Pia de\u2019 Tolomei <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b> Maria di Rudenz<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Donizetti <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">were first performed.<br \/>\nIn 1836 the best Veneto theatre was devastated in a fire.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The structure of the Teatro La Fenice changed during the reconstruction and became even more elegant and beautiful. The theatre will always be considered one of the best Italian and European theatres.<br \/>\nThe Teatro La Fenice contributed to write the history of melodrama by hosting the highest number of premieres by Verdi, after the Teatro La Scala.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">In the twentieth century the Teatro underwent a lot of restoration projects and in 1987 was rebuilt after a devastating fire.<br \/>\nDuring the twentieth century a lot of very important premieres like <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>La carriera di un libertino<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Igor Stravinskij, L\u2019Angelo di fuoco<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Serghei Prokofiev, Il Giro di vite<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Benjamin Britten, Intolleranza 1960<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Luigi Nono <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">were here performed<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;128px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Giuseppe Verdi opera&#8217;s in Venice<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1554374325779{border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 8px !important;padding-bottom: 8px !important;border-left-color: #c59c26 !important;border-left-style: solid !important;}&#8221; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-6&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Giuseppe Verdi wrote five operas commissioned by the Teatro La Fenice: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Ernani, Attila, Rigoletto, La Traviata <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b> Simon Boccanegra.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Ernani<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, whose libretto was written by the Venetian Francesco Maria, was performed on the 10<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> March 1844 and had a good success in spite of severe Austrian police censorship.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Attila, <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">performed on the 17<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> March 1846, thrilled the Venetian audience because it told the story of the foundation of the city itself: \u201c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>It had such a delightful success during the first evening, and became fanaticism during the second\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">(G. Verdi).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Rigoletto, <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">performed on the 11<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> March 1851, was Giuseppe Verdi\u2019s great success. For this reason he was called \u201ca genius\u201d by the press.<br \/>\nThe premiere of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>La Traviata <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">was a complete failure though, probably because the performers were not up to the expectations and the libretto was pretty indecent. The opera, inspired by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>The Lady with the Camellias<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by Dumas fils, was performed on the 6<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> March 1853: \u201c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>La Traviata last night, fiasco. Is it my fault or the fault of the singers? Time will tell!\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">(G. Verdi)<br \/>\nWhen the opera was performed once again a year later, it was a great success. The last Verdi\u2019s Venetian premiere was <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Simon Boccanegra<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, performed at La Fenice in March 1857. Like the Traviata, the premiere was not really successful. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>\u201cIt was a fiasco just like the Traviata\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">(G.
